MASTOIDITIS

This is a Condition in Which inflammation Occurs in mastoid process this is know as MASTOIDITIS

Causative Agents

  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Mycobacterium species
  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Headache
  • Ear discharge
  • Earache
  • Swelling around affected ear
  • Local tenderness
  • Irritation
  • Affected Area Inflamed
  • Fever
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of hearing
  • Perforation of ear-drum.

Diagnostic Evaluation

  • History collection
  • Physical examination
  • Complete blood count
  • Skull x-ray
  • CT scan of ear and head
  • MRI of ear and head

Management

  • Administer antibiotic IV or orally
  • Surgery to remove part of mastoid bone to drain infected fluid.

Complications

  • Partial or complete hearing loss
  • Vertigo (dizziness)
  • Meningitis
  • Facial paralysis
  • Destruction of the mastoid bone
  • Epidural abscess.
