MASTOIDITIS

This is a Condition in Which inflammation Occurs in mastoid process this is know as MASTOIDITIS
Causative Agents
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Moraxella catarrhalis
- Mycobacterium species
- Streptococcus pyogenes
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Signs and Symptoms
- Headache
- Ear discharge
- Earache
- Swelling around affected ear
- Local tenderness
- Irritation
- Affected Area Inflamed
- Fever
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of hearing
- Perforation of ear-drum.
Diagnostic Evaluation
- History collection
- Physical examination
- Complete blood count
- Skull x-ray
- CT scan of ear and head
- MRI of ear and head
Management
- Administer antibiotic IV or orally
- Surgery to remove part of mastoid bone to drain infected fluid.
Complications
- Partial or complete hearing loss
- Vertigo (dizziness)
- Meningitis
- Facial paralysis
- Destruction of the mastoid bone
- Epidural abscess.
