FOREIGN BODIES IN THE EAR

Any Types of Objects enter in the ear accidentally. Foreign bodies enter through the adults When trying to clean the auditory canal And In Case of Children to relieve itching. This is a External Ear Condition, This bu is FOREIGN BODIES IN THE EAR.

Types of Objects

• Animates: Insects, flies, maggots and
  Bees, etc.
• Inanimates:
• Vegetatively: Pea, beans, seeds, Nuts etc.
• Non–vegetatively: Toys, rubber, buttons, plastic materials, stones, etc.

Clinical Manifestations

• Otalgia (Ear Pain)
• Deafness (Hearing Loss)
• Irritation in ear
• Unpleasant sensation in ear
• Burning sensation (when insects or flies enter).

Management

• An insect entering the ear usually dislodged by instilling ear drops and Visualise .
• Use the three methods for removing foreign bodies
  Irrigation:
  (a). It is successful methods if there is perforation of tympanic membrane.

(b). Vegetatively and insects have tendency to smell so here irrigation should be contraindicated.

Suction:
If irrigation is not useful, suction perform.

Drugs

Antibiotics and spirit drops
(if foreign bodies impacted).

Instrumentation:
Sometimes it has to be performed by instrument under general anaesthesia if other methods becomes not success.

Complications

• Otitis media (Inflammation of Middle Ear)
• Deafness
• Foreign body granuloma
• Lodgement into middle ear
• Perforation of tympanic membrane.
