  • Purpose and Focus Unlike PhDs, which are research-based and contribute to academic knowledge,

The DNP program focuses on clinical practice.
Its primary goal is to implement evidence-based care derived from research directly into patient care.

  • The DNP aims to enhance the capabilities of nurses beyond the existing Nursing Practitioner degree, which has limitations such as operating only up to a 10-bed hospital and restricted prescription rights for certain medicines.
  • The program intends to remove these restrictions, allowing DNP-qualified nurses to manage larger hospitals and prescribe a wider range of medications, similar to how physicians operate in foreign countries.
In many foreign countries, DNPs with significant experience are considered on par with physicians.
*Strengthening India’s healthcare system and addressing the shortage of healthcare workers, as highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Eligibility and Duration
  • To be eligible for the DNP program, candidates must hold a Nursing Practitioner degree.
  • The program offers both full-time (2 years) and part-time (3 years) options.
  • Full-time enrollment requires one year of experience after completing the Nursing Practitioner degree, while part-time enrollment requires two years of experience.
  • Future and Scope
  • The DNP program is currently launched on a pilot basis, and its widespread implementation across India will depend on its success.
  • The program is envisioned to create a new post between medical officers (MBBS graduates) and nursing superintendents, allowing DNPs to lead and guide nurses.
  • While the program enables nurses to perform physician-like roles, it’s suggested that DNP graduates might be referred to as “Nurses Practitioners” to avoid conflicts within the healthcare system, as is common in foreign countries.
  • Currently Offered At
  • The DNP program is initially launched in two universities in Maharashtra:

1- Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Health Science
2- Shri Krishna Institute of Medical Science
