CHALAZION (MEIBOMIAN CYST)

Chalazion is disorder of meibomian gland in Eye characterized by inflammation of meibomian gland

Etiology/ Risk Factors

  • Viral infections
  • Contaminated hands
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Positive history of chalazia.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Increased sensitivity to lighting
  • Excessive Secretion of water
Presence of hard lump in eyelid.
  • Blurry vision.

Diagnostic Evaluation

  1. Physical examination
  2. History collection
  3. Eye examination
  4. Presence of symptoms

Management

Ignore if chalazion is asymptomatic otherwise following measures to treat:

  • Apply moist heat
  • Massage of lid
  • Topical mild steroid drops should be used
  • Intralesional steriod injection
  • Vertical incision and drainage.
