Risk Factor

  1. Family History
  2. Race
  3. Pregnancy
  4. Heredity
  5. Viral infection.
  6. Immobilization of footplate in oval window

1 • Viral Infection
• Genetic factors

  1. Destruction of normal bone
  2. Releases enzymes
  3. Impairment of vestibular and cochlear functions
  4. Deposition of calcium in the tissue (calcification)
  5. Fixation of stapes bone
  6. Immobilization of footplate in oval window

Clinical Manifestations

  1. Vertigo or dizziness
  2. Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
  3. Speaking softly
  4. Hearing better in noisy surrounding (paracusis)
  5. Earache
  6. Difficulty in communication
  7. Loss of hearing
  8. Deafness (only in severe condition).

Diagnostic Evaluation

  1. History collection
  2. Audiometry
  3. Tympanometry
  4. Otoscopic test.
  5. Weber test
  6. Physical examination
  7. Rinne test

Management

Medical Management

  • Hearing aid
  • Auditory rehabilitation.

Drugg therapy:
(a) Sodium fluoride
(b) Vitamin D
(c) Calcium carbonate

Surgical Management
Stapedectomy: It is a surgical treatment which is performed Through the local anaesthesia.
In this surgery, an, endural, incision, is made by using operating microscope. The stapes structure is removed and a small hole is made in the footplate with
a drill or laser
